Reporting a crime

If you've been the victim of a crime, you have witnessed a crime, are aware of a crime being committed, it's really important to report it. We know that sometimes it’s not easy to decide to come forward. But we also know that if no one reports a crime, it’s as if it never happened.

If no one reports a crime, the criminal is free to commit more crime,further damaging more communities and individuals.

You can share information such as

  • A crime that might be committed
  • A crime that has been committed
  • Someone who was involved in committing a crime

Why report a crime?

Reporting prevents crime

  • It heads off incidents before they can take place
  • It helps to identify problems causing crimes
  • It makes it easier to find criminals and prevent them from offending again
  • It creates a climate that does not tolerate crime

How do I report a crime?

In an emergency you should phone 100. It is a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week toll free service.You should use this service to contact police in situations when you need an immediate police response. Such situation where

  • A crime is happening now.
  • Someone is in immediate danger.
  • If the crime is serious (i.e involves vulnerable, elderly or young victims or it is of a violent or sexual nature)
  • The offender is still there or nearby
  • Someone saw the crime being committed
  • Evidence has been left at the scene

Tips for calling 100

  • Do not hang up if the call isn’t answered immediately.
  • Stay calm.
  • State the problem briefly.
  • Give the location. If possible provide the full address of where the problem is occurring, include apartment number. If you don't know the address, provide an intersection or a landmark.
  • Answer the operator's questions and stay on the line until the operator terminates the call.
  • Be as descriptive as possible. You may be asked to identify people or automobiles involved. The more information you can provide, the better operators will be able to prioritize your call and relay details to responding units.
  • Inform the operator if you do not want your name and address be given to responding units.
  • Calls from pay phones are free.
  • If the situation changes before help arrives, call 100 again and then give the operator an update.
  • If you experience problems with the operator or feel your call was handled inappropriately, ask to speak to the on-duty supervisor.

Non-emergency Situation

If you wish to contact Police and it is not an emergency please contact your local Police Station either by telephone or through personal visit or to the nearest CAW Cell in a similar manner.
